I-59/20 in Birmingham to close for 14 months

The elevated sections of Interstate 59/20 are closed to traffic in downtown Birmingham for more than a year, allowing approximately 14 months to demolish and rebuild the downtown bridges supporting the interstate. The Alabama Department of Transportation is urging motorists, especially truckers, to take I-459 around the city if possible. Improvements have already been made to I-459 in preparation for much heavier traffic. A number of detours are available online at https://5920bridge.com/detours/.
